Understanding the Enemy’s devices part 1

Lest Satan should take advantage of us; for we are not ignorant of his devices 2 Corinthians 2:11

Knowing your enemy: a note about ignorance
The important thing here is to understand the main thing that the enemy uses: ignorance. Ignorance is the furnace from which the weapon of deception is forged. It is only possible to deceive someone who does not know your intentions. Eve in the garden of Eden (Gen 3:1-6) did not know anything about what the serpent planned for her, therefore, she became an easy target for deception.

A deceiver is only able to take advantage of someone else’s ignorance.

It is clear that you cannot deceive someone who knows they are being deceived! In that case it ceases to be deception altogether. The major problem with deception is that the deceiver can easily deceive themselves by thinking that they are able to deceive one with whom they have little to no knowledge about (ignorance). This is why ignorance is actually the root problem  amongst a lot of Christians! The devil uses deception on them because of their ignorance. The reason why the devil was not able to tempt Jesus was because He knew everything the devil was trying to do to Him, therefore deception was going to be impossible.

Again I will repeat my other point that the problem with deception is the deceiver can deceive themselves. The sad thing with most Christians is that it is the case in their dealings with God. They believe that He is obligated to answer their request at any given moment. There is twofold deception process here:

1) They deceive themselves because they are ignorant of the principle of sowing and reaping (Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap- Galatians 6:7). In other words they expect to receive without giving. What they do here is sow disrespect, ingratitude and dishonor both to themselves (because they are made in His image- Genesis 1:26) and to His Majesty. According to that principle Luke 6:38b comes into play:

Give, and it will be given to you: good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over will be put into your bosom. For with the same measure that you use, it will be measured back to you.”

They give God so little honor and that is the same amount honor He will return back to them.

2) They are ignorant of who God is! Now because they do not read their Bibles, the basis from which we are to know so many things about His Majesty, they are unable to gain a simple working knowledge of Him. It is so clear:

The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom,
And the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding (Proverbs 9:10).

If the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, what exactly is it?

 11 Come, you children, listen to me;
   I will teach you the fear of the LORD.
12 Who is the man who desires life,
And loves many days, that he may see good?
13 Keep your tongue from evil,
And your lips from speaking deceit.
14 Depart from evil and do good;
Seek peace and pursue it (Psalm 34:11-14).

Only because there is ignorance of this there is no respect for the King! It is such a shame:

“ A son honors his father, And a servant his master. If then I am the Father, Where is My honor? And if I am a Master, Where is My reverence? Says the LORD of hosts To you priests who despise My name. Yet you say, ‘In what way have we despised Your name?’ Malachi 1:6

The first remedy
Proverbs 4:7:

 Wisdom is the principal thing;
Therefore get wisdom.
And in all your getting, get understanding
And also:
I applied my heart to know, To search and seek out wisdom and the reason of things, To know the wickedness of folly, Even of foolishness and madness, Ecclesiastes 7:25.
The simple thing to do is that if you do not know where to start, ask. There is no shame in it:
 If you need wisdom, ask our generous God, and he will give it to you. He will not rebuke you for asking.  But when you ask him, be sure that your faith is in God alone. Do not waver, for a person with divided loyalty is as unsettled as a wave of the sea that is blown and tossed by the wind.  Such people should not expect to receive anything from the Lord. Their loyalty is divided between God and the world, and they are unstable in everything they do,  James 1:5-8
Remember, you have to ask for the right kind of wisdom for there are two; one from the world and one from above:
Worldly wisdom
 For jealousy and selfishness are not God’s kind of wisdom. Such things are earthly, unspiritual, and demonic.  For wherever there is jealousy and selfish ambition, there you will find disorder and evil of every kind.
Godly wisdom
But the wisdom from above is first of all pure. It is also peace-loving, gentle at all times, and willing to yield to others. It is full of mercy and good deeds. It shows no favoritism and is always sincere. James 3:15-17.
The second remedy
The easiest way to make sure there is no ignorance and/or deception on your part:
 But he gives us even more grace to stand against such evil desires. As the Scriptures say,   “God opposes the proud
 but favors the humble” (quoted from Proverbs 3:34) So humble yourselves before God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. James 4:6-7.There it is! If you do not want to be ignorant of the Enemy’s devices understand that pride is the key thing that he uses to take us down. This is why Jesus made it so clear that we are to be humble:But when you are invited, go and sit down in the lowest place, so that when he who invited you comes he may say to you, ‘Friend, go up higher.’ Then you will have glory in the presence of those who sit at the table with you.  For whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.” Luke 14:10-12.

But he who is greatest among you shall be your servant.  And whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted. Matt 23:11-12.

Conclusion
The first lesson to understand is that ignorance is the source of deception. A person can easily deceive themselves. Ignorance is one of the Enemy’s devices.

The second  lesson is that pride is another weapon of his that is used against as often as possible.

In my next post I will deal with the Enemy’s three stage attack.

  1. You go boy!!! ( lol ) This is an awesome write up as I was reading some of the very same scriptures and the entire book of James this morning. This spoke to my heart. I thank the Lord for you and willingness to share with others that which was imparted to you to do out of obedience. God bless your going and coming, may all your days be abundant and prosperous. If I don’t get a chance to say it later, Merry Christmas to you and yours!

    To God all glory and honor given! As always, let The Holy Spirit lead and guide. Keep pressing on in Jesus and have an awesome day! 😉

    • Thank you so much for your kind words, Terra. I am truly humbled and honored. I am so glad that God ministered to you even further through this post and may He continue to bless and favor you in all that you put your hands to from this moment forward.

      May you also have a blessed and Merry Christmas.

  2. I suppose since you take the scriptures for what they say concerning deception you also take them for what they say concerning truth (John 8:32). Glad to hear it because so many are to the point to where their subjective truth is more important than God’s objective truth. Enjoyed the read.

    • Which is why I had to point how they are deceived in that thinking! The absolute truth found in the Word is a truth that many prefer to weigh their opinion over and come to undecided conclusion as to what they truly believe! That often happens when a lot of study has taken place with no results. Even Solomon when he lived a life outside God came to one conclusion:

      Fear God and keep His commandments,
      For this is man’s all.
      For God will bring every work into judgment,
      Including every secret thing,
      Whether good or evil Ecclesiastes 12:13-14.
